NABU was founded as early as 1899 in Stuttgart by Lina Hähnle as the "Association for the Protection of Birds". In 1990, NABU merged with the newly founded state associations of the former GDR to form NABU (Naturschutzbund Deutschland) e. V.. Today, NABU has more than 900,000 members and supporters (as of January 2023, including LBV) and is active in all German states with around 2,000 local, district and specialist groups.
